What your first surf lesson at Frexulfe is like
Never stood on a board before? Perfect — that’s how almost everyone starts at Fre Surf School. Since 2018 we’ve guided first waves at Playa de Frexulfe (Frejulfe), in Navia, and we know that turning up without knowing what to expect can feel daunting. In this guide we walk you through, step by step, what a first surf lesson for beginners in Asturias is like, so you arrive confident and enjoy it from the very first wave.
Before you arrive
All you need is swimwear, a towel, and enthusiasm. We provide the board, wetsuit, instruction and a qualified instructor. We recommend eating light, arriving a few minutes early at the meeting point on Playa de Frexulfe and, if the day calls for it, bringing sunscreen and water. No previous experience is needed — but you do need to be able to swim to take part safely.
During the lesson
We start on the sand with a short safety briefing, learn the parts of the board, and practise standing up (the pop-up). Then we head into the water in a small group, always with a qualified instructor who pushes you into your first waves and corrects you in real time. Because we work in small groups, every student gets genuine attention — which is why most stand up on their first day. A lesson lasts around 2 hours.
Afterwards
Showers, lockers, and free parking are waiting for you right by the beach. It’s a good moment to stretch, hydrate, and celebrate your first waves. And if it hooks you — it will — ask us about our lesson packages, the best value if you want to build confidence over several days.
Quick tips for your first lesson
- Listen to your instructor: safety always comes first.
- Don’t rush to stand up; first, feel the wave.
- Soak up the setting: you’re surfing in a protected Monumento Natural.
