The best time to surf at Frexulfe (Asturias)
One of the questions we hear most at Fre Surf School is a simple one: when is the best time to surf at Frexulfe? The honest answer is that on the Asturias coast you can surf almost all year round — what changes is what you’re after and the level you’re at. Here are our recommendations after many seasons on Playa de Frexulfe (Frejulfe), in Navia, Northern Spain.
Summer: the best time to learn
If you want to learn to surf in Asturias, summer is your season. The sea is usually calmer, the days are long, and the atmosphere on the beach is hard to beat. It’s the ideal time for a first lesson, a family trip, or signing the kids up for a surf camp. During these months we’re open every day, so it’s easy to find a slot. One thing to keep in mind: because we teach in small groups, summer spots fill fast — book ahead.
Autumn: to progress
Once the holidays end, the Cantabrian coast starts to receive more consistent swells. It’s a great time for anyone who already stands up and wants to progress: catch more waves, sharpen your paddling, and begin to read the sea. There are fewer people in the water and the sessions go a long way.
Spring and winter: for experienced surfers
Out of season the sea can serve up good waves, but also colder water and more demanding conditions. In Northern Spain you surf in a wetsuit all year round, and in the cold months it pays to be well equipped. This is territory for surfers with some experience and respect for the sea.
Frexulfe: a forgiving beach
Frexulfe is a west-facing sandy beach and a protected Monumento Natural. Its sandy bottom and sheltered setting make it a friendly place to start, without the complications of a rocky seabed. Even so, as everywhere on the Cantabrian Sea, conditions change — so it’s worth checking the forecast before you come and, if in doubt, dropping us a message.
So when should I come?
- Never surfed before: summer, without a doubt.
- Already standing up: late summer and autumn.
- After more powerful waves: autumn and winter, with experience.
